Day 1: Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, transfer to Arusha Coffee Lodge – 1 night.
On a lush coffee plantation five minutes from Arusha Airport, Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge is a charming and comfortable place to stay at the start or end of your safari.
Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge was once an original coffee plantation homestead. The spacious rooms and suites are scattered throughout the beautiful grounds and the coffee plantation is incorporated into the gardens. Under the direction of the Executive Chef, Arusha Coffee Lodge has two restaurants The Grill Room and The Bistro. The formers menu has been crafted with a discerning palate in mind, while the latter offers pizzas made from the on-site pizza oven served with fresh salads.
‘Traders Walk’ is located within Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge and houses Shanga, a gift shop, a Tanzanite shop, and an excellent cafe. Shanga comprises a bustling workshop manned by community members with disabilities who create works of art from recycled goods.
Day 2 – 3: Elewana Tarangire Treetops
Transfer to Arusha Airport for SkySafari flight to Tarangire – 2 nights.
On the edge of Tarangire National Park, Tarangire Treetops’ unique location in Randilen Private Conservancy allows for night game drives, guided bush walks, and sundowners.
Centered around a ‘main’ treehouse built in a thousand-year-old baobab, 20 treehouse rooms are surrounded by a dense forest of marula and baobab. Proximity to the forest canopy allows guests to engage very closely with the natural world. Guided bush walks and night game drives in the surrounding conservancy build on this experience, led by knowledgeable and experienced guides.
The 65 square metre open-faced rooms are built using local materials that afford views across the Tarangire National Park and Randilen. Each room is classicly decorated with neutral safari colours and leads on to an en suite bathroom with a double shower.
Day 4 – 6: Elewana The Manor at Ngorongoro
SkySafari flight from Tarangire to Manyara airstrip, transfer to The Manor at Ngorongoro – 3 nights.
Elewana The Manor at Ngorongoro lies hidden on Shangri-La Estate, a 1500-acre working Arabica coffee plantation, close to the Ngorongoro Crater.
A former farmhouse, the main building borrows heavily from Cape Dutch architecture and is surrounded by 20 guest cottages set in a lush verdant garden. Dark-wood floors, white walls, vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, antique furniture, and Persian rugs provide a decadent setting in which to enjoy a book by the open fire or a soak in the traditional claw-foot free-standing baths littered with rose petals.
Travellers can enjoy a walk or horse ride through the farm, a coffee tour to learn about the process of coffee farming, or simply relax by the pool and enjoy the tranquil environment in the highlands.
Day 5: Full Day in Ngorongoro Crater
Crater tour and picnic lunch.
Ngorongoro Crater, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, is a geological spectacle.
The 260 square kilometre caldera was formed three million years ago when an active volcano exploded. The mineral-rich pastures of the largely flat crater floor have turned this into a wildlife haven. Over 25,000 large mammals call the area home, many of whom are endangered, such as the black rhino and wild dog. Lake Magadi, (not to be confused with the lake of the same name in Kenya) which sits in the middle of the crater floor contains alkaline soda water inhabited by blue-green algae. Flamingo and a number of other bird species feed off the algae and congregate in large numbers. Along the shores of the lake, Lerai Forest, a dense yellow fever woodland is frequented by a healthy population of leopard.
Day 7 – 9: Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp
Transfer to Manyara airstrip, SkySafari flight to Serengeti – 3 nights.
Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp sits in a stunning location on the side of the Olgarabosho Hills overlooking the Moru Kopjes, Lake Magadi and the Serengeti plains.
The original lounge was built by the famous conservationist and wildlife filmmaker Alan Root as his Serengeti base. In a secluded corner of the Serengeti, the camp provides excellent access to the Southern Serengeti wildebeest migration. A perfect vantage point from which to start day-long game drives that begin with a champagne picnic breakfast, includes a delectable picnic lunch on a private rock and ends with a sundowner overlooking the vast plains.
Each of the enclosed tented rooms is adorned with throw carpets and soft furnishings made from local and sustainable materials. Leather trunks and lanterns evoke the spirit of early twentieth-century safaris, and the en suite bathrooms include a flushing toilet, vanity basin, and period-style hot shower.
The SkySafari itinerary includes Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp over the wildebeest calving season from November – May.
Day 7 – 9: Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp
Transfer to Manyara airstrip, SkySafari flight to Serengeti – 3 nights.
Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp is set in a remote part of northern Serengeti amongst rugged and rocky outcrops, overlooking the Grumeti River.
Built using natural wood and all-enveloping canvas, this classic yet comfortable camp, includes a split-level lounge, a swimming pool, and viewing platforms. The elevated wooden decks throughout camp allow guests to engage in the drama of the wild directly below while enjoying 360-degree views of the dramatic Serengeti beyond.
The camp is situated right in the path of the wildebeest migration, which can be seen between July and August as they travel north to the Masai Mara, and again later towards the end of the year upon their return. However, visiting the camp should not be overlooked during other times of the year; the Serengeti is home to the richest plains-based ecosystem in the world.
The SkySafari itinerary includes Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp from June – October
